Understanding National Test Results
As the school year drew to a close, your son/daughter brought their National Test results home. However, not all schools inform parents how to read these results.

How The National Tests Work
Normally, as your child progresses, you would expect your child’s results to go up. However, this isn’t how the National Tests work. These tests are diagnostic tests and really pupils scores should not normally go up and down. With the paper copies of tests, this was often the case. That is because pupils in years 2 and 3 take the same test, pupils in years 4 and 5 sit the same test, pupils in years 6 and 7 sit the same test and pupils in years 8 and 9 sit the same tests. This would suggest that the graph would look like the below.

In year 2, they have their first set of results. In year 3, they sit the same test as Year 2 pupils. Because they are older, you would expect them to score higher as they are more mature. This pattern can be seen in years 4 and 5, 6 and 7 and finally in year 8 and 9.
This should be rectified with the initial online maths procedural test that was introduced this year. The other tests (reading and maths reasoning) will go online over the next two years.
What You Should Look For
If the results show a consistent downward trend, then that could be showing that the pupil is not reaching his/her potential. There are many reasons for this occurring.
As you can see here, even though the results do go up and down there is a downward trend.
